Over the past few days, several Democrats representing Washington state in congress have sent clear and strong condemnations of ICE’s disgusting, unjust killing of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. Last week, Washington’s own Rep. Emily Randall said “enough is enough” on Bluesky and announced she will co-sponsor articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
“Kristi Noem’s lawless agents are out of control,” Randall wrote in a statement on social media. “We cannot have rogue government agencies killing its own people in our communities.”
Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) first announced the plan to file three articles of impeachment for the “incompetent leader” and “disgrace to our democracy” last Wednesday with a handful of Democrats including Randall, Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.), Sydney-Kamlager-Dove (D-Calif.), Jill Tokuda (D-Hawaii) and Morgan McGarvey (D-Ky.) joining her effort. In a press release, Kelly laid out the three offenses she wants to ding Noem for:
Obstruction of Congress: Secretary Noem willfully obstructed Congressional oversight and withheld Congressionally appropriated funds in violation of her constitutional oath and federal law.
Violation of Public Trust: Secretary Noem compromised public safety, violated due process of American citizens, and directed unconstitutional actions.
Self-Dealing: Secretary Noem abused her office for personal benefit and steered federal dollars to associates.
Cool! But this probably isn’t going to pan out. Republicans control the House and they seem perfectly happy with all the intimidation, kidnapping, and murder of civilians. The balance of power could change after the upcoming midterm elections, at which point House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he hasn’t “ruled out” impeaching Noem. Brave stance, Jeffries!
Even if Democrats pull off an impeachment, it is just not enough. The president would nominate another fucking ghoul to the position and the Department of Homeland Security would still exist.
